DELORME STREET ATLAS

There are two very important items regarding Delorme Street Atlas:

  1. Installation problems are common as you must install it with all anti-malware programs (and preferably all programs) turned off.
  2. You must install the Advanced File Management option (included on your install CD). This will enable multiple routes and Draw Layers.

On the Links/download page, you will usually want to download files from the Delorme column. Other than the Scenic Routes file, all of these files are Delorme Draw files that include a custom icon to depict the subject location.

After you donwload the file you want and unzip it, you add the Draw Layer to your map as follows:

  1. Click the Map Files tab.
  2. Click the Add button
  3. Click Draw File
  4. The ?Add Data to Maps? window pops up. Navigate to where you saved and unzipped the file you downloaded and click the Add button.

You should see new icons on your map. Click the Draw tab and then the File button. Every time you download and add a new map file overlay, a new Draw Layer is created and you will see it here.

You can turn on or off each individual Draw Layer by clicking the box before the file name. This is a very powerful feature. You can have many Draw Layers installed, but you can choose which ones to display.

You can change the name of the Draw File to something that makes more sense to you. Just double-clicking the name and typing a new name.

By default, Draw Layers are saved in the C:\Delorme Docs\Draw folder. Custom icons are saved in the C:\Delorme Docs\Draw\DrawImportSymbols.dim file.

ADVANCED TIPS

Creating a new Draw File

Option 1 ? lat/long file available

A business may have a file available on their website that includes lat/long data. Sometimes there is also additional information available that you may want to display on the map. Download the data and import into a spreadsheet. This will allow you to massage the file for import into Delorme so that it includes the data in the proper format and also includes the data you want to display.

For the data to be imported into Delorme, it must be in the format of latitude, longitude, data. The file can either be tab or comma delimited. The last element, data, is what you want displayed with the icon ? such as the address or any other information you want to display.

Once you have your data file completed, import it into Delorme as follows:

  1. Click Draw tab and then the Symbol (Flag) button.
  2. Choose the Symbol Set and Symbol that you want to use (See the Creating a New Symbol section for creating a new symbol).
  3. Click File, Import. A new window (Import Draw File) opens. Browse to the location where you saved your data file and open it.
  4. You now have a new Draw Layer.

OPTION 2 ? No lat/long file available

In this case, you must manually locate the location of each data point (campground, service center, etc):

  1. Click the Draw tab, then click File, New, Draw. This creates a new Draw Layer name DrawLayer. Make sure that the Active Box is checked Rename the Draw Layer and click Done.
  2. Navigate to where you want to place a Symbol for the file you want to create. Click the Find tab and then Advanced, Street Address to find the location. If you want the symbol placed at the exact location and you do not have an address, you may need to use Google Earth to help you find the exact location.
  3. Once you have the location for your symbol, click the Draw tab and choose the Symbol Set and Symbol that you want to use (See the Creating a New Symbol section for creating a new symbol). Use the cursor to place the Symbol where you want on the map. Type what you want to display with the symbol in the Label field.
  4. Complete for all of your map locations.
  5. When you have entered all your locations, click the Draw Tab, then File, then Done and your new Draw Layer is saved.

Now that you have created a new Draw Layer, you may want to share it with others. For other Delorme users, you can email them a copy of the new Draw Layer that is located in the C:\Delorme Docs\Draw\ folder. If they are using another mapping program, it is best to give them a text file. Click Draw, File and select the Draw Layer you want to share and make sure the Active box is checked. Click the Export button. A ?Export Draw File? window pops up. Navigate to where you want to save the file, type in the file name, and click Save.

Creating a new Symbol

Click the Draw Tab and then the Symbol (flag) button. Select the symbol set that you want to add a new symbol to and then click Edit. Click New and then draw your new symbol. When you are done, click Save and your new symbol is saved in the symbol set.

ADVANCED PROCEDURES

If you would like to use a different icon that the one that was supplied in the Draw File, download the text file instead of the Draw File from the download page. Then import this into Delorme as follows:

  1. Click the Draw tab, then the Symbol (Flag) button. Click the symbol that you want to associate with the data.
  2. Click the File button, then Import. A new ?Import Draw File? window pops up.
  3. Navigate to the text file you downloaded, select it, and click Open. A new Draw Layer is created using the icon you selected.

If you want to add or delete data that is displayed with the icon, download the text file instead of the Draw file. Open the text file in a spreadsheet and change the data field (format is latitude, longitude, data). After you have made the changes you want, save the text file and then import it to Delorme as follows:

  1. Click the Draw tab, then the Symbol (Flag) button. Click the symbol that you want to associate with the data.
  • Click the File button, then Import. A new ?Import Draw File? window pops up.
  • Navigate to the text file you downloaded, select it, and click Open. A new Draw Layer is created using the icon you selected.
  • CHANGE ICON ZOOM LEVEL

As you view a map at higher zoom levels, some of the Draw Layers can get rather crowded displaying the custom zymbols and the associated data (name, address, phone number, etc). The solution to this is to use the free program GPSBabel to collapse the icons to small red dots above a user-defined zoom level. Instructions are on the GPSBabel page
