Download GPSBabel

GPSBabel is an easy-to-use program that haa two main uses:

1. Delorme users can use it to collapse POI's to a small red dot above a user-specified Draw Level.
2. For all users, GPSBabel will let you convert almost any map format file to almost any other map format file. Owners of stand-alone GPS devices (or other map software programs) that have the ability to import map files can easily convert a map file to the format required for their device.

When you download GPSBabel, you get both a command-line and a GUI (Graphical User Interface) version. The GUI version is much easier to use and this tutorial focus on it.

Shown above is the GPSBabel screen. The two main areas are the Input File Format (highlighted in red) and the Output File Format (highlighted in green).

The first step is to choose the format of your input file. In the example above, the file that we want to covert is a comma separated value file (csv), so we click the down arrow and select comma separated values from the drop-down menu. Next, click the File Browse Button for the Input File and browse to its location on your hard drive and select it. In the example above, I have selected the file SWMGE.csv which is located on my drive N in the \Maps\New Files\Nov2007\Nov25\SWM\ folder. To create the location of the output file, browse to the location where you want to create and then type in the name of the file. In the example above, I clicked the Output File Browse button and navigated to N:\MAPS\Nov2007\Nov10\WM\ and then I typed in SWM.an1 in the box above. (Note ? as you can see, I use a lot of folders and subfolders, but you do not need to do this).

When you have made your selections, click the "Let's Go" button and your new file will be converted.

In most cases, you will want to download the text file from the download page and use it to convert to another file format.

If you want to use GPSBabel to collapse your custom POI (and associated location details) to a small red dot above a user-defined zoom level, the Input portion of the diagram above would include the Draw File you want to convert and the Output portion would have all fields the same as the Input portion, but the zoom option would be selected and you would input the zoom level you want. Note in the example above, zoom=6 was selected.

Note that you must have already saved the Draw file so that the custom icon is in your Symbol database.
